Bad Eating Habit among Malaysians- BEL 422


INTRODUCTION
Bad eating habit is abnormal behaviors of eating. Most people afflicted with these problems are adolescent girl and young woman. According to Brefere. L (1997) approximately 1 percent of adolescent girls and young woman develop anorexia nervosa, a dangerous condition in which they can literally starve themselves to death. Another 2 to 3 percent of adolescent girl and young woman develop bulimia nervosa, a destructive pattern of excessive overeating followed by vomiting or other compensatory behavior to control their weight. A more recently recognized eating disorder, binge eating disorder could turn out to be the most common about 3 percent. With this disorder, binges are not followed by purges, and so these individuals often become overweight. Eating disorder also occurs in men and older woman, but much less frequently.
Bad eating habit among Malaysians will effect on psychological disorder, change in social life and diet style. People that have psychological disorder are high imaginary rather than real, they have stringent dieting (Brefere. L, 1997). According to Brackney (1979), social life cans change when people have thinking about body image, feeling of self esteem and personal identity that can lead to social problem. Social problem may lead to depression, anxiety and stress. These will effects on health and self esteem. Bad eating habit also will effect on diet style. People will practice unhealthy diet and not followed of what they have normally eaten. Some of them may desire to eat or overeats, they always feel hungry. Other than that eat a little of food because fear of fat and some make themselves vomit after eat.
In Malaysia, Khor (2002) has found bad eating habit have relationship with psychological disorder, social life and diet style. Some people with eating disorders or bad eating habit refuse to admit that they have and do not get treatment. So, as a family members and friends must help to encourage and advise these persons to seek treatment.
There are several psychological disorder problem caused by bad eating habit. The problems are anorexia nervosa, bulimia and binge eating disorder (O’Dea, 1995). Anorexia nervosa is an illness that people refusal to maintain body weight at above a minimally normal weight for height, body type, age and activity level. These people feel they are overweight even when they are bone-thin. Dr. Walker. L (2007) said that, anorexia nervosa found almost in female teenager between fourteen to twenty-five years old. The effect from anorexia nervosa is damage vital organs such as the heart and brain. Reduced body fat leads to lowered body temperature and inability to withstand cold.
People with bulimia nervosa may tend to eat large amounts of food and then vomited, taking enemas and exercising obsessively. People with this disorder may binge and purge as much as several times a day. They always repeated of binging and purging while they can hide their problem for years. The person was extreme concern with body weight and shape. As with anorexia, bulimia also can give bad effect. This illness can damage body by frequent binge eating and purging. When vomiting, the acid in vomit wears down to outer layer of teeth and can cause scarring on the backs of the hands when fingers are pushed down the throat to induce vomiting. Further, the esophagus becomes inflamed and the glands hear the cheeks become swollen (Goldfab,1985).
Binge eating disorder people feel that they hungry often. They tend to uncontrolled eating everytime they eat. They will eat large quantities of found and do not stop eating until they are uncomfortably full. People with disorder may binge everytime they feel depressed. According to Khor (2002), 28.9 percents of students will overeat when they depressed. Binge eaters usually have more difficulty losing weight and keeping it off than do people with other serious weight problems. Most of the people that have binge eating disorder are obesity.

TRADITIONAL VERSES INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AGE

            Hospitality industry was connected with the services that we use every day. Delivering the good services to the guest or customer are difficult to achieve if did not have knowledge in hospitality industry. Working to serve the customer or guest needs experience so that we can serve them in what they need and want. We also can avoid lack of understanding of their needs. Hospitality industry also gives many job opportunities to the people nowadays. Many job applications were opened to the people in hospitality industry. Working in hospitality industry need people facing with the customer and serves them with high qualification skill. Someone must be ready in what situation that need during facing the guest or customer.
            Revolution in hospitality industry was growth quickly because it really required nowadays. Revolution is the changes that have make hospitality industry become more popular in information technology age. There were the greatest transformation has happen from traditional to information technology age. The uses of electronic system and internet are very helpful to this industry to survive for the future. Many people were very happy with the revolution and some of them still using traditional method in their work. For the some older people they prefer to use traditional method because they did not have knowledge in the technology. Some of the hotel still using traditional method in some work at their hotel because they care about this particular group of their customer.
            Nowadays using of the information technology is important to make sure that the work will go on with smoothly and will satisfy the guest or customers. Consumer are faced with an array self service technologies that allow them to produce a service independent of direct service employee involvement. Self service technologies include automated banking terminals, self service scanning at the supermarket checkouts, self service gasoline pumps, automated telephone systems such as phone banking, automated hotel checkout and numerous Internet-based services. Many companies have developed and take a chance to using technology strategies and design to encourage customers to undertake self service through internet. But not all customers take advantages from using the technology application in their life everyday.

TRADITIONAL VERSES INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AGE

Hospitality industry needs to improve from time to time. The hospitality industry revolution will affect relations between consumers in the marketplace. In order to improve operational efficiency, improve service quality and reduce cost practitioner in hospitality industry have implemented information technology in their businesses. The information technology gives potential for solving our problems either in economic, educational and political. As information technology become more popular and important, they have great impact on hospitality industry. Information technology helps customers to search for and purchase customize hospitality and tourism product.
It also helps suppliers by developing, managing, and distributing their products without any time limits. Different from by using traditional method, it was very limited in all aspect such as timing, space to keep the data, materials using and others. They need to keep the data using books that require a lot of space to keep all the data if using the book. They maybe need one book for one customer. It also will exceed the cost that might be useful for other things. So that why revolution in hospitality industry was easily to accept by customer because information technology is advantageous to the hospitality industries, hotel and other tourism related company. According to Conolly and Olsen (2000), information technology is largest forces that effect the changes in hospitality industries.
In information technology age, revolution was happen with quickly. Many hospitality businesses have started to use web-based training. Internet has brought a lot of advantage to the workplace, it will assist the employees to secure data, keep records on their work schedule and also keep records of the customers. It differs from traditional age, the employee need to keep the data and records by manually. It will expose the data or information stealing by someone or left. Although information technology has many advantages it also has disadvantages because the employee will use the internet for their personal uses not only for their work. Traditional method still using nowadays because certain group of people was not have knowledge in information technology such as fill the personal data using computer during reservation or others.
Then information technology also helps in hospitality education. The internet serves as an effective and innovative tool for students and educators to learning. According to Dopson (2005), hospitality graduates need to acquire knowledge of e-commerce competencies as hoteliers are going to manage revenues online. Universities are offer e-commerce subject to students. It really helps the students when they want to find a job in the future because they already have knowledge.
Information technology age also gives benefits from customers’ aspect, they can choose from their home what they want to buy or internet are famously using by customers to buy a flight ticket or booking a room at the hotel. By using internet customers or guest can buy and booking the room without go to the organization. It also can save time and cost because they can easily choose the room for example, from their computer. Then, during reservation time it become easily if hotel can provide check in service in the guest room because it will avoid the guest from waiting too long at the reception counter. With the technology that has nowadays everything is possible to do with the enough budget. If we look during traditional age, guest need to go to that organization to booking the room or customer need to go to airport to buy a ticket for flight.
Then, information technology also helps the organization to collect detailed information about their customers. Many hospitality websites invite customers to register and state their preferences. Hotel managers can then make use of these preferences and tailor personalized services and products to their customers in order to increase customer satisfaction. The hotel manager can look about their customer so that they easily to handle that guest if they have little information about that guest. Guest also will satisfy if the workers are appreciate them and treat them in what they want.

From marketing aspect, information technology age make hospitality industry growth quickly because using internet the information about the organization was easily can find by the customers or guest. Many organizations such as five star hotels advertise their hotel through internet. The other organizations also advertise their promotion in the web-site. Big company will have their own web-site and the customer that interest about their goods can access from their web-site. They also focused on how to market, promote and advertise a website in the current competitive hospitality industry. In traditional age the marketing promotion will doing by using pamphlet, banners or by letters. It very limited because this information only can deliver to the certain people around that area only, but by using internet everybody can access the information at everywhere anytime they want.

Hospitality industry also has revolution in recruitment process. Improvement and development in technology have made it much easier for recruiter and applicant to communicate and update important information. Many big companies used new technologies such as text message to connect with the candidates. They can remind the candidates by sending text message. This is more cost saver and improved the attendance rate at assessment events. The organizations can send an email to candidates. That email requires the candidates book themselves onto a recruitment event. They only need to set up the interview date and time. It was an easy process to candidates to fill an assessment event. It also has quickly response to the email.  The big company such as River Island, recruitment team used social media as strategy to attract candidate. The team creates on Twitter and so far it was successful with over 600 followers. From that it will inform the followers of new vacancies.

The revenue management staff must have knowledge on how to protect their system from missing or leaking the important information to wrong people. Technology also improves guest service quality, it is important for manager to select and implement the most appropriate technology in their hotel in order to enhance service quality. When the guest satisfied with the services that offer at the hotel it will make the guest loyal to that hotel. It will help the hotel to survive in the future.

The managers also can easily feedback to customers’ comments using the technology. At the same time, anyone could read consumers’ opinions and companies’ feedback, through which those hotels would gain trust from the public. In addition, hotel managers should frequently evaluate guests’ reviews and comments posted in different electronic word-of-mouth channels, so that they could better understand the performances of their hotels and customers’ preferences, thereby developing better hotel marketing and pricing strategies. This is a new platform for communication between hotels and customers, so there is the opportunity for managers to find out what customers like and dislike.
Hotel managers should spend more time and efforts establishing this effective communication strategy by addressing customers’ complaints to gain customers’ trust and return business. Customers or guest feel they are appreciated by the employee at the hotel if their comments get the feedback from the managers. They will think that the hotel really care about their guest. In traditional age, it was difficult to get the comment or feedback from the guest or customer. It is because the customer or guest usually did have a time to fill the comment card and certain guest did not want their identity exposed to the employee at the hotel when they give some comment. But if using internet they can easily comment about that hotel anytime they want without meet anybody and they have their own privacy rather than fill the comment card in front of the reception area.

Developing of technology in the world nowadays also help firm’s marketing strategy. It will help to design the product. If the product is poorly designed it would not create meaningful value to the customer. Then technology was very popular nowadays because most services product cannot be inventoried. By using the internet it will help service marketers to find ways of smoothing demand levels to match available capacity. During traditional age if there is no demand, unused capacity is wasted and the organization loses the chance to create value from these assets.

During traditional age all work is limited to do because did not have enough resources to use. Customer, guest and consumer can access the information about using internet. They did have to go outside to find the information that they needed.

The transformation or revolution of hospitality industry give advantages for the company that has today. They can easily manage their company, work and their employee by using the technology that have today. This revolution gives big impact to the hospitality industry to become more powerful.
